The gazebo is located on the crest of a steep rock overlooking Lake Kallavesi, in eastern Finland. The view with its rock faces covered by lichen, immense boulders moved about by glacier, pine forests and the gleaming lake below brings to mind the landscape paintings of the Finnish masters of the period of National Romanticism in the end of the 19th century.

The building, located as a terminus of a winding foot path, is intended as a place for meals, celebration and meditation. It defines and frames the view and includes the sky as an element of the interior space. It is a kind of camera obscura that combines the exterior and interior spaces, the opposites of being sheltered and exposed. The structure is conceived as a device that simultaneously disorients and brings one in an intense relation with the landscape. The form of the building, resembling an erratic boulder, and the impression of flying were suggested by the powerful landscape of the site.

The structure consists of glued wooden frames, stiffened with steel plates and crossbracing. The windows are of laminated glass and they are suspended from steel bars. The amount of sunlight can be controlled with roller blinds made of thin bamboo slats.

The grey colour of the exterior resembles that of the surrounding boulders while the inside is stained in light bone colour.
The gazebo was first on display at water level on a flat shoreline at the Summer Exhibition of the Salmela Art Centre in 2002 before it was lifted on its final site by a huge crane.

Der Architekt Johani Pallasmaa konzipierte dieses Experiment aus Form, Materialien und räumlichen Beziehungen.

Diese erstmals als Exponat im Kunstzentrum Salmela gezeigte Version eines kleinen Aussichtsgebäudes wurde im Auftrag eines Kunden im Osten Finnlands gebaut.

Auf der Klippe eines glazialen Felsens öffnet sich der Bau mit einer verglasten aufwärts gerichteten Vorderfront und Decke zu einem großartigen Naturschauspiel. Seine abgestumpfte kubische Form lässt an einen riesigen Felsenbrocken denken, der an eine Bergkuppe liegen geblieben ist.
Das Gebäude sei eine Camera obscura die unsere Gewohnheit ändert, die Landschaft als horizontales Panorama wahrzunehmen.

House in Arruda Dos Vinhos

This projects deals with the reconstruction of a small building in ruins in an area classified as green belt. The project uses the same materials of the ruined building (stone, earth and wood) but re-ordered: a wood structure filled with local earth (wattle and daub); the stone coming from the demolition will be used in the foundations and surrounding area. Otherwise, the architects associated natural materials (wood, earth and cork panels) with industrial ones (concrete, metal, glass and polycarbonate).

The architects built a section of the projected wall at a natural scale as a prototype. There is a wood structure (20×10 cm wood columns spaced every 60 cm) with stabilising wood poles forming an x cross. The inside of this structure is filled with earth, giving the wall high thermal inertia. The external side of the wall is covered first with panels of cork agglomerate, 5 cm thick, for thermal insulation, followed, on top of that, by corrugated polycarbonate sheets. The inside of the wall is covered with wood planks, with a trapezoidal cross section, 5 cm wide, every other 10 cm.

On the 7Th of March 2007 the local council of Arruda-dos-Vinhos, 35 km Northeast of Lisbon, Portugal, issued a permit for the reconstruction of a small house in typical vineyard countryside. It was the final step of a 13 month licensing process.

Das 60 m2 kleine Haus (Innenfläche netto) in einem Sukkulentengarten mit der Ruine eines Vorgängerbaus liegt in Real de Catorce, im Norden Mexikos. Die geringe Grösse wird durch die Offenheit des Grundrisses kompensiert. Durch die richtige Platzierung reicht  der Wohnraum optisch bis zum Sonnenuntergang in der Wüste. Der temporäre Aufenthalt im Haus wird zu einem Wohnen in der Landschaft.

Obwohl das Haus einige Zentimeter über dem Boden zu schweben scheint und quasi wie ein Schiff die offene Seite der Ruine als Andockstelle gewählt hat, ist es kein verschiebbares Typenhaus, sondern ein präzise in die Situation eingefügtes und für den spezifischen Ort erdachtes Objekt. Das offene Winkelgefüge der Ruinen wurde auf das neue Haus übertragen. Eine L-förmige neue Wand ergänzt die bestehende C-förmige Ruinenmauer. Die Ruine  formt so einen vor dem Westwind und fremden Blicken geschützten Aussenraum, welcher gleichzeitig die optische Erweiterung des Wohnraums bildet.
Die gewählte Bautechnik entspricht den am Ort vorhandenen technischen Möglichkeiten. Die verglaste Längsfassade übernimmt die halbe Dachlast. Um eine zweischichtige Fassade zu vermeiden, wurde eine Metallfassade entwickelt, welche zugleich Tragstruktur und Fensterrahmen ist. Die verschiebbaren Sonnenschutzelemente sind aus im Garten gefundenen, trockenen Agavenblütenstängeln gefertigt.
