Instant Housing ist ein temporäres Wohnkonzept, das sich an Obdachlose und andere urbane Nomaden richtet. Die mobilen Wohnelemente sind nicht als dauerhafte Lösungen für Obdachlosigkeit gedacht, sondern als Notunterkunft für  Bedürftige. Jede einzelne der robusten Kapseln ist vollkommen mobil und kann von einem Einzelnen genutzt werden.

Die Container sind mit verschiedensten Einrichtungen ausgestattet, um unterschiedlichen Situationen und persönlichen Bedürfnissen gerecht zu werden. Die primäre Funktion jedes  dieser Wohnelemente ist es, einen sicheren Platz zum Schlafen oder Ausruhen zu bieten. Eines ist sogar mit einem Computer ausgestattet und fungiert als transportabler Arbeitsplatz.

Das Ziel von Instant Housing ist es, die öffentliche Wahrnehmung obdachloser Menschen zu verbessern, indem es sie mit einem eigenen Statussymbol ausstattet. Die funktionale Erscheinung der Container gleicht der anderer Objekte auf der Straße. Sie sehen aus,  als ob sie zur Straße gehören und geben somit auch dem Benutzer das Gefühl, ein Teil seiner Umgebung zu sein. Dieses Projekt hat eine verbindende Funktion, weil es innerhalb der urbanen Landschaft einen Raum für diejenigen schafft, die normalerweise von ihr ausgeschlossen sind. Es wird einem Individuum möglich, einen Platz an einem Ort oder in einer Stadt sein eigen zu nennen, indem es eines der Instant Houses besetzt. Das Individuum wird so zum Bürger, anstatt ein unerwünschter Eindringling zu sein. Einige der Einheiten können elektrisch verkabelt werden, was die Verbindung untereinander verstärkt und dem Benutzer wortwörtlich die Möglichkeit gibt, sich in eine vernetzte Gesellschaft einzuklinken.

«Dass so ein Instant Housing provoziert und polarisiert, ist klar. Es regt auf. Für mich ist das ein Mittel, auf ein Problem aufmerksam zu machen. Es ist nicht die Lösung des Problems. Die transportable Unterkunft ist Kunst, gekoppelt mit einer realen Funktionstüchtigkeit. Ich gehe von einem erweiterten Kunstbegriff aus. Dekorative Kunst sollte von mir nicht erwartet werden.» (Winfried Baumann)

Of course, nature arranged on many levels provides an extension to existing nature as well as a symbol of its artificiality.

Should we expand nature vertically to increase the density of our environment? Will we build not only “vertical cities” but also “vertical landscapes”? Is this project called “campingflat” by artist and designer Kevin van Braak a possibility to provide multi-level extra space for visibility and accessibility?

No, in this case there is definitely not a pragmatic or functional approach. Kevin van Braaks project description:

In the work CampingFlat the starting point is to broaden the experience of the space, space not necessarily being physical but also mental. Campgrounds, in a four story high scaffolding building, wrapped in a green fabric, seems to offer a complete package to the spoiled camper or tourists. Everything is present: tents, campfire and animals. But everything is also fake:
the grass is artificial, the campfire is made of plastic, the animals are stuffed and the bird sounds are projected from speakers. Danger is reduced to the minimum and in this way also the adventure of the camper. I wanted to put the attention on the absurd effect on a society where everything is focused on more, faster and compressed. Where for an instant the “over” regulated recreation falls into an obvious illusion. The question is if this fiction can really satisfy us or merely gives us a short superficial satisfaction. The challenge for the visitors was to be seduced by the illusion I created or that what we call reality? Namely, the environment in which the CampingFlat was placed. The border between both stays unclear.

Hotel Everland is a project by the artist-duo L/B (Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann).

Everland is a Hotel with only one room including a bathroom, a kingsize bed and a lounge. The bounteous dimensioned room represents the subjective dream of a hotel: the architecture, the playful details, as well as the request to steal the golden embroidered bath towels. All Everland guests are partaking in the project.

Also the concept for operating the hotel was defined by the artists. All facets are important constituents of the artistic idea: The room can be booked for one night only, the mini-bar is fully stocked and included in the price, breakfast is delivered to the door and a record collection stands at ones disposal.

Hotel Everland was first developed for the Exhibition concept “Everland” at the Swiss national exhibition in the year 2002. From June 2006 until September 2007 the one room hotel was exhibited and run as a Hotel on the roof-deck of the Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig, Germany. As a last destination Hotel Everland moved to Paris from October 2007 until spring 2009. High above the city, with a view on the Eiffel Tower, it was installed on the roof of Palais de Tokyo.

After Paris, Hotel Everland travelled back to Switzerland and is not run as Hotel since. There are no additional destinations planned.
